EYES

Risk of yellow fever emergence in Southeast Asia

Project overview

A Franco-Vietnamese vector study exploring why yellow fever has not become established in Asia despite the presence of competent Aedes mosquitoes.

Objective

Assess whether a sylvatic yellow fever cycle could become established in Vietnam and investigate the potential role of Aedes albopictus in blocking viral replication and preventing transition from an urban to a sylvatic cycle.

Study design

Experimental infection of three mosquito species associated with urban, rural and forest ecosystems in northern, central and southern Vietnam. Vietnam serves as a control setting for testing the vector-based hypothesis of yellow fever’s absence from Asia.
